Bulk skincare orders can feel like a nightmare when you’re selling to distributors. Trial sizes add complexity to orders since they are usually small, varied, and come in huge quantities. Merchants often ask, “How do I let my wholesale buyers order hundreds of minis quickly without the chaos?”
However, Shopify’s native layout isn’t capable of handling this kind of complex, variant-heavy products. That’s where tools like MultiVariants help. With a variant grid, bulk add-to-cart, and minimum order quantity (MOQ) rules, you can handle bulk orders with less stress and more control.
In this article, we’ll show you how restrictions on quantity and variants can make things easier for both you and your customer.
If you sell skincare, you already know how complex B2B orders are. Shopify’s native layout can hinder distributors from buying multiple variants at once. However, they typically do not want to simply purchase “moisturizer” — rather, they require 30 matte-finish, 20 dewy, 15 SPF samples, and a mix of trial serums as well.
To proceed, distributors must first select 30 matte-finish moisturizers and add them to the cart. They then must return to the product page and add 20 dewy moisturizers to their cart. Subsequently, they have to revisit the product page for the 15 SPF samples. Too much work, right?
Here’s where most merchants often hit roadblocks:
Under-ordering headaches. Occasionally, distributors purchase fewer items than your minimum requirement. As a result, you are left chasing them to top up the order, or in a worst-case scenario, stuck fulfilling orders that are more costly to process than they are worth.
Sample pack struggles. Offering trial-size skincare products is beneficial for customers who want to test before committing. Nonetheless, managing those packs with variant restrictions can feel clunky without the proper setup.
From the merchant’s side, this leads to wasted hours, mismanaged inventory, and distributors who become frustrated with the slow process. From the distributor’s side, the experience feels inconvenient and outdated, which can prompt them to look for faster suppliers.
In a wholesale scenario, time and accuracy are money. If distributors can’t place orders easily, they will either cut their order short or skip your business entirely. That’s why solving bulk skincare orders isn’t just about smoother checkout — it’s about maintaining your strong and predictable B2B relationship.
Let’s walk through a real example.
Imagine a brand called Selene Skincare. Along with their regular products, they sell trial-size serums, mini moisturizers, and sample sunscreens. Distributors love ordering in bulk. Now imagine this scenario:
A distributor visits Selene’s website and thinks, “I need 10 of each moisturizer in all three finishes, plus 15 serums across different scents.”
Sounds simple, right? Not on Shopify’s default system. The distributor has to add each variant to the order manually. That means dozens of clicks, double-checking quantities, and often mistakes that slip through. What should be a quick bulk skincare order turns into an exhausting back-and-forth. They can’t just select everything in one view. They’re forced to click through endless product pages, which feels inefficient for businesses used to B2B-level ordering systems.
After one exhausting experience, distributors will definitely avoid you next time. Trial-size skincare is meant to encourage more buying, but without bulk ordering support, it ends up creating friction instead of fueling growth.
This is where things change. Instead of struggling with endless clicks, a variant layout display puts all options in one place. Distributors can see every trial size, shade, and fragrance at a glance — and select the quantities they want in a single step.
Here’s how it solves your biggest pain points:
For merchants, this means you don’t waste time chasing down corrections or fixing small, unprofitable orders. For distributors, it feels like a professional wholesale experience: fast, accurate, and convenient.
In short, MOQ and variant restrictions transform trial-size skincare from an inventory headache into a scalable B2B opportunity. You keep control of margins, and distributors get the speed they need.
When bulk ordering works smoothly, both sides win.
For distributors:
For merchants:
And let’s not forget the relationship impact: when distributors enjoy ordering from you, they come back. Bulk skincare orders go from being a pain point to being a loyalty driver.
Here’s a quick roadmap for getting started:
Install MultiVariants from the Shopify App Store and select your preferred plan. After that, you’ll be redirected to the dashboard. From here, you can create a ruleset.
The first thing you’ll see is the title option. Set titles for your admin and storefront view.
The second thing, and maybe one of the most important things, you’ll notice is the product selection box. You can apply the ruleset to all products, a specific vendor, type, tag, or product. To make our example simpler, here we’re selecting a specific product – Selene Daily Moisturizer with SPF 50++ (Trial Size)
MultiVariants offer four different display options. You can customize the display by selecting different styles for different variant options.
This is what you’re looking for, right?
In this section, you can add restrictions. You can also choose not to set any restrictions.
We’re selecting two restriction options here- Min/ Max Order Quantity and Variant Restriction.
Min/ Max Order Quantity: Set minimum and maximum order quantity limits for individual variants or the total combination of all variants of the same product.
Variant Restriction: Set the minimum and maximum number of variants required to place an order.
Test other restrictions to understand what works best for you.
We set the minimum per variant to 10. So when a distributor adds a variant to the cart, it starts at 10, and they can’t go lower.
The total minimum order across all variants is 20. This means the add-to-cart or checkout button only works if at least 20 items are selected.
The maximum order allowed is 99.
For variant restrictions, we set a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5. This means customers must order at least two different variants, but no more than five.
You can skip this step if you want.
Now MultiVariants works meticulously with a discount app, DiscountRay.
Go to DiscountRay’s dashboard ➡ Create New ➡ Quantity Discount. After give a title select the same product. Here, we selected Selene Daily Moisturizer just like we did with MultiVariants.
Now, add discounts based on quantity ranges. For example, if one of our customers buy 30 moisturizers they will get 5% discount. Another customer can have 15% discount if they buy 50 units.
With DiscountRay, you can schedule the discount and tag a specific customer.
That’s it. Within a hour, you can take trial-size skincare from messy, manual ordering to a clean, scalable wholesale flow.
Now, your customers can see and choose all the variants from one product page. No more back and forth!!
There is a “show offers” button under every variant. Customers can click on them to find out about the discounts. It is an automatic discount. They don’t have to do anything extra to activate the discount.
Now, let’s talk about the restrictions. How will it work on the store front?
For variant restrictions, we set a minimum of 2. Here you can see that the customer chose 20 quantities, meeting our quantity restriction. HOWEVER, the ‘add to cart’ and the ‘checkout’ button are still inactive!
Why?
Because, they chose only one variant! There is a clear warning message about the issue.
For the Min/Max restriction, there will be a warning message as well if they don’t meet the restriction.
With MultiVariants, your quantity rules don’t stop at the product page — they carry over to the cart too. That means customers can’t sneak around the restrictions by lowering quantities before checkout. You stay in control, and your order rules stay consistent from start to finish.
Bulk skincare orders don’t have to be stressful. With the right tools, trial-size products can fuel bigger, smarter wholesale sales instead of creating chaos.
MultiVariants gives you the grid, MOQ rules, and bulk checkout features you need to keep distributors happy and your margins safe. Distributors get the variety they want in less time. Merchants get higher AOV and fewer errors. Everyone wins.
Ready to simplify bulk ordering? It’s time to make wholesale ordering as smooth as your best-selling moisturizer.
