The Dropdown option in MultiVariants lets customers select one product customization choice from a dropdown list. You can add an optional image and price to each choice, set one choice as the default, make the selection required, and display one shared dropdown or a separate dropdown for each variant.

Before You Start: Make sure the product is included in the ruleset where you want to add the Dropdown option. The option will appear on products that the ruleset applies to.

If you are new to Product Options, first see how to set up Product Options in MultiVariants.

How to Set Up a Custom Dropdown Option

Follow these steps to create and configure a Dropdown option.

Step#1 Open Product Options

>> Go to the MultiVariants dashboard, open an existing ruleset or create a new one, open the Product Options tab, and click + Add option.

Step#3 Configure the Dropdown Settings

>> Configure the fields based on how you want the Dropdown option to appear and behave on the storefront.

  • Option title — enter the heading customers will see above the dropdown, such as “Select printing type.”

  • Short description — add an optional short description to explain what customers should choose.

  • Help text — add optional instructions or supporting information below the dropdown.

  • Required — set to Yes if customers must select a Dropdown choice before adding the product to the cart.

  • Display on each variant — leave this unchecked to show one shared dropdown above the bulk-order section. Check it to display a separate dropdown under each variant row so customers can make a different selection for each variant.

Step#4 Add Your Dropdown Choices

>> Add the choices customers can select from the dropdown list. Each row contains the following settings:

  • Dropdown Title — enter the label customers will see for this choice, such as “Screen print.” The title can contain up to 100 characters.

  • Image — upload an optional thumbnail for the Dropdown choice. The maximum file size is 1 MB, and supported formats include JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and SVG.

  • Price — enter an optional additional charge for this Dropdown choice. Leave it blank if the choice should not add an extra charge.

  • Default — select the Dropdown choice you want pre-selected when the product page loads. Only one choice can be set as the default.

Click + Add attribute to add another Dropdown choice. Drag the handle on the left of a row to change the order in which the choices appear in the dropdown.

Example: For a printing method option, you could add “Screen Print,” “Embroidery,” and “Heat Transfer,” set “Screen Print” as the default, and add an extra price to “Embroidery” if needed.

Step#5 Save the Dropdown Option

>> Click Save in the top save bar after reviewing the Dropdown settings.

Step#6 Test the Dropdown Option on Your Storefront

Open a product page where the ruleset applies and test the Dropdown option. Confirm that all choices appear in the expected order, the default choice is pre-selected, any add-on prices are applied correctly, required selections are enforced, and the selected choice remains attached when the product is added to the cart.

Common Issues

Customers can add the product without choosing from the dropdown

Set Required to Yes if customers must select a Dropdown choice before adding the product to the cart.

The wrong choice is selected when the page loads

Check the Default setting and confirm that the choice you want pre-selected is marked as the default. Only one Dropdown choice can be set as default.

Selecting a Dropdown choice increases the price

Check the Price field for that choice. Remove or update the value if selecting the choice should not add an extra charge.

The Dropdown choices appear in the wrong order

Drag the handle beside each choice in the attribute table to arrange the choices in the order you want them to appear.

I need a different Dropdown selection for each variant

Enable Display on each variant to show a separate dropdown under each variant row.
